Student Loan Forgiveness for Nurses 2022 in United States

Nurse Practitioner Loan Repayment Program

The Nurse Corps Loan Repayment Program targets nurses who work in underserved communities in critical shortage facilities (CSFs).

Registered nurses who work at least 32 hours per week in a qualified facility can have 60% of their student loans paid off within two years of employment. Borrowers have the option of getting an additional 25% of their Nurse Corps loans paid off for the third year.

Applications are accepted only once a year. Before you apply, check the program requirements and guidelines to see if it’s right for you.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF)

If you work in the public sector, your federal student loans can be forgiven through Public Service Loan Forgiveness after you work full-time and make 120 payments, which do not have to be consecutive.

Federal Direct Loans in good standing (for example, not delinquent) are eligible for forgiveness. To be eligible, borrowers must work at least 30 hours per week to be eligible for government or non-profit organizations, including a non-profit hospital.

To help you stay on track, be sure to fill out an employment certification form and submit it to FedLoan Servicing, the loan servicer for this particular program. Unlike forgiveness through an income-based plan, your forgiven balance under PSLF will not be considered taxable income.

However, student loan forgiveness through PSLF is difficult due to the specificity of the program’s requirements. As of September 2020, less than 2% (3,469 out of 171,371 applicants) have been forgiven, according to the Ministry of Education.

Federal Perkins Loan Cancellation and Settlement

If you have federal Perkins loans and work as a full-time nurse, you may qualify for up to 100% of your loans. While new Perkins loans are no longer being made to students, borrowers who already have them can still cancel them under the program’s rules.

Nurses must be employed full-time to qualify for the exemption, and the loans will be forgiven gradually over five years. You must apply either through the school that disbursed your Perkins loans or through your loan provider.

National Health Corps

Through the National Health Service Corps Loan Repayment Program, registered nurses or certified nurse-midwives who work in facilities located in designated healthcare shortage areas around the country may be eligible for loan assistance.

The program requires a two-year commitment in exchange for rewards of up to $50,000 for full-time workers and up to $25,000 for part-time workers. Apply online and provide additional supporting documentation as required.
